Christmas Vacation

We are in Durango, Colorado enjoying winter at its best! Durango received about 12 inches of snow last week – just in time for our arrival and it is projected to snow for the next three days.

We drove up on Friday and got to the house around 1am. As we were topping the mountain that leads down into Durango, the temperature gauge on the car read -07˚. When we pulled up at the house it was 4˚ (while unloading the car, we were grateful for the extra 11 degrees). The first snow and ice that we encountered on the road was when we went through the gated area leading to the house. We thought we would pull right up into the garage to unload… that didn’t quite work out as well as we had hoped. The house is not lived in year round, it is a get-away home so we were the first to arrive and as such… the driveway was packed ice. Naturally, the mountainous terrain includes the driveway at a slope. Our vehicle just didn’t want to drive up it so we finally managed to get it into the driveway enough to allow other cars to pass behind it and left it for the night. The next day we went to town to buy sand, salt, or whatever we could find. When we pulled back up at the house we were able to pull it all the way up to the garage door and as we started climbing out of the car, it started sliding down the driveway… I’ve never seen anything like it. So, Austin being quite the trooper, wanted to scrape the ice…

He did a great job! Our car stays parked and we stay on our feet and everyone is happy.

While he was out shoveling, the neighbor dog, “Dixie” came out and the neighbors asked if he wanted to play ball with her…

I’m not sure who had more fun, Austin or Dixie.

Meanwhile, Bryce had been begging Papa to take him for a hike. So they bundled up and away they went…
They were gone at least 45 minutes and when they got back Bryce said “that was the short hike, we’ll take the long hike tomorrow.” In 20˚ weather – I would think any hike is too long!
We are thoroughly enjoying being away from home and spending time with family. I just couldn’t resist including this photo of two of my favorite family members - my 22 month old nephew, Cole and my cousins dog, Tucker (we’re dog sitting for the holidays)…
Just a reminder to kiss the ones you love!
Enjoy your week!
